Don't want to start an argument but plain water will remove the salts and it's the only substance that will dissolve it. The ammonia myth has been around for as long as I can remember but ammonia isn't needed. Boiling water works best followed by drying out and re oiling the bore.

These are wonderful dogs. Reminds me of one we had for 12yrs. She would lie down beside our granddaughter and watch over her and she'd stand up and get between the baby and anyone who approached her.
