Good old classic country was heard on every radio in the small east Texas community where I grew up. As a child I remember it as a time when no one bothered to lock their doors. Only two families in the neighborhood had the new thing called television. After school during the week I raced home to my favorite radio programs Red Rider, Sky King and the Lone Ranger. On Saturday night the Grand Old Opry with Minnie Pearl and Grand Pa Jones was the highlight of the weekend. People pulled their cars to the side of the road and took their hats off while a funeral procession passed by. You dialed your telephone if you were lucky enough to have one. Even then you were on a party line where eavesdropping was part of the social life.In my early teens Elvis dominated the radio waves. Rock n' Roll, hot rods and cars with tail fins were the rage. It was an era when people went to church twice a week and profanity was rarely heard especially in public and never on radio or television. You whispered when you gossiped. Football, baseball and basketball were the games we played. A NASCAR race was a story old men told about running from the revenuers. Alcohol was the drug of choice. And petting in the back seat of a car was where you learned about falling in love.
As a boy I learned to sing gospel music in a little country church where I attended. There the art of two and three part harmonies was how music was taught. When I was a senior in high school I fell in love with country music. I grew up hearing country legends Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell. But, as a teenager, Elvis, Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves and doo whop became my favorites. It was the golden era of great American music. The lure of the instruments played in the music captivated my senses. And I was drawn to the romance, heartbreak and earthiness in the lyrics of the songs. To me it was an extension of the gospel music I grew up with. And like a tree planted by the water I've remained close to my musical roots. I believe the songs I write and perform offer new and fresh adventures for you and the millions of fans who adore classic country and gospel music.
Your right. Emily is truly part of the community. She's even helped an old geezer like me learn how to do this stuff. You know, talent runs a lot deeper than just singing, writing and performing. Emily is the real deal thru and thru. She is not only very talented but she has a loving heart f...
