Reverse Osmosis water purification systems are widely available, so actual distillation is not required. Get one at least for the water you drink and cook with. Whole house systems are also available.

But for the guy simply wanting to know what magnetism is, the real answer is that Physicists still don't know, beyond the sense that magnetism is magnetism. It really is that basic. It underlies everything, and we have not gotten deeper except in theory.
