It's too early for polls on the Congressional elections in 2012, but so far all 3 that have been made, including the most recent by a Democratic affiliated outfit, show the Republicans ahead. Democracy Corps found that voters prefer prefer a republican candidate to a Democratic one 47-45%, poll taken April 10-12.

The President's budget reduction plan was a combination of cowardice and leftist populist nonsense. He suggested 4 trillion in cuts over 12 years, which is 7 years after he will be gone from office if he gets 2 terms. In other words, we have a 1.5 trillion per year deficit and he wants to cut about .3 trillion annually, most of it when he's no longer around and will bear no political price for it.

The cuts in Congress being discussed aren't close to enough, and it is a joke that the Democrats are making such a big deal of the GOP's miniscule scaleback proposals. A big reason we're in the debt hole we are in is because not only do we not tax poor people and lower middle income families, but we actually have the IRS pay them money through the tax system. These people at the end of the year owe no taxes, and so they get back all they paid in all year. But then, on top of that, through the EIC, additional child tax credit and Making Work Pay credit, we give them free money via refundable tax credits. This must end now.

In order to balance the budget, we need to immediately abolish all refundable tax credits and make them nonrefundable instead. If you qualify for various things, you may reduce your taxes owed to $0. However, the idea that, with 14 trillion national debt, we will give people free money through the IRS, which is supposed to raise revenues for the govt, is ridiculous. The max anyone should get back is what they paid in all year, not a cent more.

Republicans should move to at least 49 senators in 2013 following Jim Webb's announcement today that he will not run in 2012 for the Virginia seat. Repubs should pick that one up and retiring Kent Conrad of North Dakota's seat. Demos have 23 senate seats up for election next time, Repubs 10.
