I'm proud of my heritage, my history and my people. Therefore I like to read a lot about the history of Slavic tribes, Kingdom of Poland and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, which was known as one of the major powers of Europe and like every country it had its golden age when the empire reached from the Baltic sea, all the way down to the Black sea. From my own knowledge I would describe the golden age of Poland from 1410 +, after defeating the greatest power of Europe -- the Teutonic Order, in one of the biggest medieval battles -- the Battle of Grunwald, also known as the Battle of Tannenberg, all the way to the II Northern War, when the Commonwealth had to fight against Tsardom of Russia, Swedish deluge, Prussian wanting independence and Cossack Uprising on Ukraine. Technically the Commonwealth has managed to survive and win the Great War with Pyrrhic victory, however both countries : Poland and Lithuania were extremely destroyed and the nobility became even more incompatible, leading the great empire never to recover again and eventually falling into decline in 1795.

In my opinion the Commonwealth would be able avoid a decline if the constitution forming the Constitutional Monarchy would not exist, instead, I believe there should be a one strong leader forming Absolute Monarchy just like in France, Sweden or Russia. The constitution was called to be a 'holy thing', but my personal opinion is that it was nothing else but a bandit act from the nobility, a piece of paper giving them rights to debauch. Such a big kingdom as Poland needed a strong leader which people would not only respect, but literally fear. Constitution and the 'golden freedom for the nobility' led to an extreme disagreement, lack of economic development and eventually the civil war. In the case of the commonwealth there was only one type of people who benefited from the disagreement in Rzeczpospolita, the surrounding enemies wanting to lay their hands on the big land the Commonwealth used to own. It could be easily done after the Great Northern War, when Poland and Lithuania suffered badly from the destruction of settlement and lack of capital to repair the kingdom.

Jan III Sobieski -- the savior of Europe -- was the last Polish king of the empire. In 1683, when Poland was at a bad state as I've described above, he still managed to collect a massive, well trained army of Winged Hussars in order to save Vienna, the capital of Austria. Poland did not ask for anything in return, considering the fact that even the son of Sobieski who supposed to sit on the throne after his father, died in the battle, Austrian people were indeed thankful and looked up to Poland. However, not for so long since the plans of partitions of the Commonwealth already existed. In the early 1700s Austria already tried to lay its hands on Poland, of course not succeeded -- yet. They didn't mind the fact that we saved them from the Ottoman Empire, which would reduce gates of Vienna, along with its people, to rubble.

The next king of the Commonwealth was Augustus II the Strong from Saxony ( a free electorate from the Holy Roman Empire ), who began a long term Saxon dynasty in the Commonwealth, eventually destroying the empire from the inside. Every next Saxon king was operating very anti-Polish politics, which resulted in partitions. Of course we could blame the 3 enemies of Poland ; Prussia, Russia and Austria, and of course we should, however the enemy number one of our empire were our people themselves. As I've mentioned above, golden freedom for the nobility was indeed a kind gift, but a biggest mistake of the Commonwealth. Back in those days people had different mentality, honour was above all, every man wanted to be greater than his opponent and greed was at the state of wildness. This led to disagreement, assassinations, wars and other totally unnecessary things. If the Commonwealth had a one strong leader with absolute monarchic power, these issues would never take place.
