Ashton's Sylvia was restored to the splendour of its elegant and opulent three-act form for the 75th anniversary celebrations of The Royal Ballet and it is now firmly back in the Company's repertory. Its story, from Greek myth, tells of Sylvia, whose vows of chastity mean she cannot return the love of the shepherd Aminta. Eros, up to his tricks, intervenes, only to see Sylvia abducted by the hunter Orion. Rescuing her, Eros finally brings the lovers together.
Ashton was inspired by the music of Leo Délibes to create such great choreographic sequences as the famous Act III pas de deux and the role of the mischievous Eros, one of those delightful, darkly comic characterisations for which Ashton became known and loved. With Margot Fonteyn as his original Sylvia, Ashton made the title role a wonderful showcase for virtuosity, invention and classical beauty. And it is indeed a beautiful ballet to look at -- the epitome of Ashton style in stage settings of great detail and painterly splendour.

Great music, a gripping story and tragic end: Puccini's Tosca. The story follows a complex and ill-fated triangle of passions: the naïve idealism of a painter, the state-sanctioned sadism of the Chief of Police and, caught between them, the beautiful diva whose ability to inspire passion is her fatal undoing. Puccini's music has such great set pieces such as the 'Te Deum', 'Vissi d'arte' and 'E lucevan le stelle', linked by a musical drama that constantly winds up the tension towards the inevitable, fateful conclusion. Jonathan Kent's detailed production draws fully on the historical backdrop of Rome in 1800, beautifully evoked in Paul Brown's lavish designs. The pageantry of church ritual, the darkness of a brooding study with its hidden torture chamber and the false optimism of a Roman dawn -- all throw into relief the love of Tosca and Cavaradossi and the deadly, destructive obsession of Scarpia.

The Sleeping Beauty is one of the most-loved of classical ballets, combining in a single work all the charms and virtuosity that ballet has to offer. Favourite highlights of music and dance run through it, and include Tchaikovsky's famous and lyrical Waltz and the Rose Adage as Aurora meets in turn her four princely suitors. This famous staging was created for the The Royal Ballet in 1946, and revived for the 75th anniversary celebrations of Company in 2006. Luscious designs bring to life the royal court, the panoramic journey of the Prince to the overgrown castle and the great celebratory dances (including other famous figures from fairytale) of the happy ending. A great showcase for the Company's talents and a living milestone in its history, this Sleeping Beauty's style and visual splendour are unique to The Royal Ballet.

The story of Pinocchio -- the little wooden figure who wanted to be a real boy -- is a children's classic. The return of Will Tuckett's inventive telling of the story is becoming something of a classic too, a success to parallel his seasonal Linbury Studio Theatre sell-out, The Wind in the Willows. The colourful designs of the Quay Brothers and Nicky Gillibrand make this a colourful treat; music by Martin Ward is shot through with the rhythms and melodies of gypsy music and traditional folk song to accompany the journey of the magical puppet who can sing and dance and turn somersaults.

The Nutcracker is a perennial Christmas favourite, packed with magical moments of one of the greatest of classical ballets, all to the sounds of one of Tchaikovsky's most famously tuneful scores. When young Clara's favourite Christmas presents -- a nutcracker doll -- comes to life, she is drawn into magical adventures that lead from a battle with the Mouse King to the Kingdom of Sweets. The fantasy is brought to vivid life through Peter Wright's reinterpretation of Lev Ivanov's choreography, and Julia Trevelyan Oman's wonderfully indulgent designs of late 19th-century grandeur, delicate in detail and rich in colour.

This Christmas The Royal Opera presents a different festive take on the familiar 'Cinderella' story with Rossini's La Cenerentola in its ever-popular and elegant production -- 1950s chic, and even a limousine for that special journey to the all-important ball. Angelina beats her unpleasant sisters Clorinda and Tisbe to the heart of the handsome prince Don Ramiro, despite his disguise. Rossini's music is at its most diverting, with lyrical tunes, characterful ensembles and, of course, impressive coloratura flourishes. The Royal Opera has assembled a wonderful cast of lyric singers to bring out all the charm of the music, and Magdalena Kožená's debut with The Royal Opera in the fabulous title role certainly adds an extra note or two of glamour - if it were needed!
