My cats do this too.
They also used to ram themselves headlong into doors with poor closing mechanisms to force them loose. They were very surprised when the bolt on my brother's room was replaced. They get into the cabinet under the sink, too. There's no keeping them out.

Honesty is best.
The open relationship thing is working for me, and anyone I'm with knows exactly what our agreement is-- which is, it goes both ways, and if they ever want out, there will be no jealousy tantrum. :)
