In November 1951 the Free Trade Hall in Manchester was packed for a Gala Reopening Concert,(in the presence of the Queen, 3 months later the Queen Mother) following bomb damage in World War 2.
KF was recovering from her surgery, and subsequent treatments.
Sir John Barbirolli asked if she was strong enough to sing the Final Piece.It had never been in her repertoire as she associated it with big contraltos with very big voices from earlier in the century.
She readily agreed to Sir John's request and what we hear is her only rendition of Land of Hope and Glory by Elgar.
She sings it in the unmistakeable Ferrier tradition,permitting the choir and audience to sing the patriotic overtones.Sounds like a great ending to this very special concert.
To have her on record singing this is I imagine the latest gem to emerge from the vaults.
It was made available courtesy of the Barbirolli Society.
The disc is devoted to other Barbirolli/Halle Orchestra pieces from 1969 back to 1951.
The music critic of the Manchester Guardian ended his critique thus "It was fine and it was right,but lovers of the tune will fear that never again can they hope to hear it in such glory.'There were few dry eyes',as notices of such events used to say".

"Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song and tune, basically a ground of the form called a romanesca.
A widely-believed (but completely unproven) legend is that it was composed by King Henry VIII of England (1491-1547) for his lover and future queen consort Anne Boleyn. Anne, the youngest daughter of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire, rejected Henry's attempts to seduce her. This rejection is apparently referred to in the song, when the writer's love "cast me off discourteously." It is not known if the legend is true, but the song is still commonly associated with Boleyn in the public mind.
Hans Holbein (1497/8--1543) was the first great British artist, and is regarded as one of the greatest artists of all time. He moved to England from Basel in 1526--8 and then again in 1532--43, an extremely turbulent time in English history when all around were losing their heads. His arrival effectively brought the Renaissance in painting from continental Europe to Britain.

t.A.T.u.is short for a russian Word "Ta Lyubit Ty" Meaning This Girl Loves That Girl. The duo consists of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova, who were both on the child group "Neposedi" in 1997, And later, as they reached the maximum 13 year old age limit of Neposedi, were founded by Ivan Shapalov, who soon would turn them to the "Same sex love" project, With songs such as falling in sexual and romantic confusion. This stirred up plenty of controversy, Especially since it was shocking to some to see young teenage girls portraying a same sex romance story. During the years with Shapalov (1999-2004) They released a hit Album in Russia during 2001 and a year and a half later became hits internationally. The girls soon broke-up from their Manager Shapalov on their reality show in Podnebesnaya due to disagreements with music and possibly lack of freedom. Yulia Volkova is pregnant and a mother of a baby girl, and the group has released their brand new albums "Dangerous And Moving" and "Lyudi Invalidi" 2005. They have since added in a back up band featuring Troy and Sven.
They are expected to release another two albums 2007-2008 and a feature film starring new acts and Mischa Barton.
