About this user

Hi, I'm Adam!

I am currently a ministerial student at Houghton College.

I am a human being, currently a resident of planet earth, traveling on this journey we call life. I call myself a Christian as my first and foremost identity; and what I mean by that is that I try my best (and fail) at living a Christ-like life. I believe that Jesus demonstrated the best and most perfect way to live in harmony with God, creation, and the rest of mankind and that if everyone lived as Christ lived, the world would be perfectly harmonious. That is what I strive for; to be like Christ in all of my ways; to demonstrate perfect love and live in perfect harmony with my brothers and sisters in humanity, and with God and His creation.

I love to love. Compassion and charity are at the core of what I believe it is to be a Christ follower. Being a Christian isn't about knowing the time and date that you prayed "the sinners prayer", its about loving people and being compassionate; working together with other believers as one body to bring reconciliation to a hurting world. Frankly, I think Jesus cares more about feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and helping the oppressed than he does about your stance on predestination, doctrine of the atonement, or your understanding of the Eucharist.

Being a Christian is an ongoing process. Sanctification doesn't begin and end at "Jesus I accept you as my Lord and Savior". It begins when you decide to follow Christ and ends after you die. You should say "Jesus I accept you" every morning and be born again every day. The journey of a Christ follower is one of life-long transformation. We are all being made into the image of Christ, over time, through our cooperation with His Spirit at work within us. Christianity is about an entire reformation of the self in which all of our worldly ambitions of greed, vanity, lust, self-centered gain, and ill-will are put to death on the Cross of Christ, and in their place Christ-like virtues of selflessness, charity, compassion, service, hospitality, peace-making, and kindness toward all begin to take over.

Love and selfless compassion IS the Gospel. The Good News that Jesus came and died to give to us is that he provides a way for mankind to live in perfect harmony with each other, with creation, and with God. Christ died to bring the balance back to the universe that has been thrown off by mankind straying from how we ought to live. To re-establish a right relationship with His creation, God Himself, being manifested as Father and Son, and sent his Son to earth to live as a mortal man and die as a sacrifice for our sins. Christs death removes the guiltiness of our sin, faith in his resurrection gives us hope of our own resurrection, and by choosing to follow the example of his life we have the promise of everlasting life. Jesus died in our place, taking the punishment we deserve for having turned away from God, thus giving us a second chance to live right and build his Kingdom here on earth; to fulfill the prophecy of peace on earth and goodwill toward men.

Friends, God is at work in the world today. He has big plans, and He is inviting YOU to come and join Him in His great work. He is not a silent God, He is still speaking to us today, but I think most of us arent really listening. Things are changing, and that frightens people. Some people mistake their own articulation of the Gospel for the Gospel itself. Your own brand of Christianity should never be taken to be Christianity itself. All human articulations of the Gospel will fail to adequately explain what God did for us in Christ and what He continues to do in us with Christ. And that being so, all human articulations of the Gospel will become outdated and new ones will be needed. That is what is going on right now. Evangelical Christianity is fading and a new, exciting chapter in Christianity is emerging.

Christianity is an ongoing conversation between a bunch of equally confused and equally broken people all trying their best to listen to a Spirit that is continually at work to perfect our understanding of truth and how to apply and interpret that truth in its current context. I invite you to the table of discussion, to join this conversation called Christianity. May we all humbly seek truth together.
