As many as 3.5 million Americans are homeless each year. Of these, more than 1 million are children. In fact, The Center for American Progress estimates that GLBT youth account for 20-40 percent of homeless youth in the US because families are banishing their GLBT children as they come out younger and younger; the report finds, the average age that a GLBT youth becomes homeless is 14.4 years old, and on any given night, more than 300,000 children are homeless.

Help to Stop Hate

Tolerance, fundamentally, is a personal decision, which comes from an attitude and belief that every other person on earth is a fellow human being. We each have the power to change our attitude and belief, to overcome our ignorance and fears, and to influence our children, our peers and our community because tolerance begins within each of us. Questions you might ask yourself:

Am I careless with my descriptions of people?
Am I quick to label people?
Do I belong to private clubs or groups that exclude people?
Do I have the courage to tell a friend not to tell an inappropriate joke in my presence?
Do I take economic segregation and environmental racism for granted?
Do I tell sexual orientation jokes?
How can I go out of my way to know people who are different?
How diverse is my circle of friends?
How diverse is my holiday card list?
How diverse is my neighborhood?
How often am I in the minority?

Founded by Dennis and Judy Shepard in memory of their twenty-one year old son, Matthew, who was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Wyoming in October 1998, The Matthew Shepard Foundation seeks to "Replace Hate with Understanding, Compassion & Acceptance" through its varied educational, outreach and advocacy programs and by continuing to tell Matthew's story. The Matthew Shepard Foundation mission is to support diversity programs in education and to help youth organizations establish environments where young people can feel safe and be themselves by educating and enlightening others on the importance of diversity, understanding, compassion, acceptance and respect because everyone must participate in developing solutions to problems that are rooted in ignorance and hatred in order to meet the goal of replacing hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance.

Matthew Shepard lived his life with a deep desire to help others and a sincere hope that all people would be treated with understanding, compassion and acceptance. In fitting tribute to Shepard's life, dreams and beliefs, the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Point Foundation have partnered to create the Matthew Shepard Scholarship Fund. The Matthew Shepard Point Scholarship will help some of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community's future leaders and role models receive the college education they deserve and need to help make this world a better place.
