"The River Valley Community Band," conducted by Charles L. Booker, Jr., is a continuation of a proud tradition in the River Valley that began with the Western Arkansas Community Band established in 1980. It is a non-profit organization with a board of officers and consists of business professionals, doctors, teachers, band directors, homemakers, and retirees who played in high school and college band programs and want to continue performing. It is also an excellent opportunity for those who may not have played for several years, but want to dust off their musical instruments and play again. The band meets on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm in the Breedlove building on the campus of the University of Arkansas Fort Smith or at the Southside High School band room. The community band performs concerts throughout the area and as a part of the UA Fort Smith's Season of Entertainment. The band also participates in the ceremonies at the National Cemetery on Memorial day and Veteran's Day. The season culminates with the band's performance at the Major's Fourth of July celebration on the Fort Smith riverfront.
