SYNOPSIS: When seventh-grader Zack moves away from the crime and gangs on the streets of Boston, he looks forward to starting over and building a better life with his single mom and little brother in rural Danville. But reaching his new home, he finds a new lifestyle which may prove to be more violent and brutal than the one he's left behind. Danville is an isolated, desolate, poverty-stricken town with a population of under 1,000.
At a local skate park and at school, Zack is goaded into fistfights. Against his will, he displays fighting skills derived from living on the mean inner city streets. These survival skills grab the attention of a feared punk teenager, Dan.
Dan, who is cloaked in local myth, befriends Zack and cons him into an established town secret - a corrupt game of bare-fist brawling. With little choice, Zack becomes a key player. Zack is suddenly a macho celebrity in his new hometown, but soon he realizes that Dan, tormented by the death of a local boy, is embedded in a much larger scheme.
It becomes apparent that the fight club is part of a larger conspiracy of profit and sick entertainment controlled by the town's corrupt authorities - the mayor, the school principal, and the town's two cops - one of whom is dating Zacks mom. They run the town, and the kids are victim without recourse.
Zack eventually realizes for better or worse that Danville is his new home, and he must do something to rise above the violence and make his life right. But who can he trust?
The action takes a deadly turn when Mrs. Jenkins, a caring schoolteacher, learns of the fights and attempts to investigate and is mysteriously killed.
Zack refuses to be helpless any more. With his new friends, Jake and Dawn, he sets out to find the truth about his teacher's death, and about how the local teen passed away, before it's too late for him, his mother or little brother.
But the fight conspiracy leads to friends pitted against friends. The town's stubbornly misguided power structure does not budge. And finally, Dan - himself nothing more than a blackmailed foot soldier of the authorities - is at the breaking point.
It is just a matter of time before someone else is killed. Only drastic action will incite change. Will the boys break the chain of violence and do the right thing? What is the right thing?
A shocking ending begs the question.
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO REMAIN VIOLENT suggests a rural Kids meets Fight Club. A low-budget feature, with limited locations and characters, this riveting suspense drama is a cautionary tale about too much power placed in the hands of too few people with too few checks. It promises to be a startling edge-of-your-seat thriller posing strikingly topical questions for todays world
