X-Treme Team Wrestling (XTW) Battle Rankings is actually a simple concept. The main aspect is of winners moving up the ladder and losers moving down. Matches are played out in Legends of WrestleMania (LoW) and Smackdown vs Raw 2010 (SvR) on the XBox 360. Here's a look at the ladder...#1 Title
#2 Title
#3 Title
Rung 1
Rung 2
Rung 3
Contenders Pool
Hopefuls Pool
[For the Tag Team Battle Rankings, only 2 Title Tiers are used.]
Starting at the bottom with the Hopefuls Pool. Each show, along with having match types submitted each person who responds also lists their Top 5 Hopefuls. These are names that are not listed in any of the other matches. The only name (or names) automatically selected would be whomever drops down from the Contenders Pool. It's a way to continually get new faces involved. The one rule to keep in mind in terms of the match itself... win the Hopefuls Pool and you get to move up to the Contenders Pool for the next show. The Hopefuls Pool is always a 10-man Royal Rumble (or 20-man for Tag Teams) so the odds of advancing are low but the chance is there.
The Singles Contenders Pool is a 6-man pool. In LoW it's always a Battle Royal but SvR has some different match types to pick from. The Tag Team Contender Pool is a 10-man (5-team) Royal Rumble. The winner moves up to the Rung 3 match while the loser will drop down to the Hopefuls Pool. The others will remain in the Contenders Pool. In some cases there could be 2 or more names that enter the Contenders Pool from Rung 3 as a result of a 3-way match or something. In that case, an equal number of names will drop from the Contenders Pool to the Hopefuls Pool.
That brings us finally to the meat of Battle Rankings. In the 3 Rungs it's as simple as win to move up a level and losers move down a level. There may be times where a special rule will apply but it's basically just this simple.
Now we get to the Title Rungs. For the #2 and #3 Titles, if the contender loses the match, they will drop down a rung as normal. The one who defended his title, however, will not move up. Instead they will remain where they are to defend their title again. How do they move up, you ask? Well, as a way of sort of mimicking real pro wrestling, having a lower level title is a way of "grooming" you for a higher title. So when a champion from Title #2 or Title #3 loses, they then get a shot at the next higher up title as a reward for having held the previous title. Where this rule doesn't apply is the #1 Title where the loser, be it the contender or champion, will drop down to the #2 Title.
With some of these variables it will create scenarios where certain rungs may be vacant or occupied by one, three, four, or even more people at once. If odd things happen that I don't anticipate, they will be dealt with as they happen.
Finally, LoW and SvR are run separately but since LoW allowed the ability to import most of the SvR roster, all SvR winners each show (that are also in LoW) will be eligible to be voted into the Hopefuls Pool in the next LoW show. They are not allowed to be voted in permanently so to be eligible again, they'll need to win again. In this way, it opens the door for more characters to be used in LoW while still keeping the legends as the focus.
