This is a live performance of me singing the gospel classic "Because Of Whose I Am" at the Gospel Temple Church in Carmi, IL somewhere around 1981-1983. I'm accompanied by live music performed by a couple of members of my old southern gospel group, The Monarchs. There's a baby crying near the beginning of the song and it continues for about one minute, until it was ultimately taken out of the sanctuary. This was recorded using an audio cassette recorder by my late brother, Gary Thomas, in the back of the sanctuary. I hope you enjoy.
Lead vocal - Richard Thomas Harmony vocal - Stephanie Oliver Piano - John Oliver Drums - John Steven Oliver Bass guitar - Kenny Jackson
LYRICS: I'll never understand why He saw a piece of clay And said, "I want it, I'll use it" The greatest mystery is that somehow in spite of me He said, "I'm gonna love you" He took me in His arms Said, "This child belongs to me" He placed me in His Kingdom Now I live like royalty It's not because of what I am Not because of what I've done It's because of Whose I am
My Father is Lord of everything From here beyond forever He's given me His name said if I'd ask anything He'd gladly give it
He put a robe upon my back Placed a ring upon my hand Said the riches of heaven were all mine It's not because of what I am Not because of what I've done But because He first loved me His grace has set me free His blood is flowing through my veins I'm adopted by The King It's because of Whose
He put a robe upon my back Placed a ring upon my hand Said the riches of heaven were all mine It's not because of what I am Not because of what I've done It's because of Whose
He put a robe upon my back Placed a ring upon my hand Said the riches of heaven were all mine It's not because of what I am Not because of what I've done It's because of Whose
He put a robe upon my back Placed a ring upon my hand Said the riches of heaven were all mine It's not because of what I am Not because of what I've done It's because of Whose I am
I'll never understand why He saw a piece of clay And said, "I want it"

LYRICS: She's faced the hardest times you could imagine, And many times her eyes fought back the tears. And when her youthful world was about to fall in Each time her slender shoulders bore the weight of all her fears, and her sorrow no one hears, still rings in midnight silence, in her ears...
Let her cry, for she's a Lady Let her dream, for she's a Child Let the rain fall down upon her She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild.
And if by chance, I should hold her, Let me hold her for a time; But if allowed just one possession I would pick her from the garden, to be mine.
Be careful how you touch her, for she will waken; and sleep's the only freedom that she knows. And when you walk into her eyes, you won't believe; The way she's always payin' for a debt she never owed, and the silent wind still blows, that only she can hear, And so, she goes.
Let her cry, for she's a Lady Let her dream, for she's a Child Let the rain fall down upon her She's a free and gentle flower, growing wild. (repeat)

LYRICS: They asked me how I knew, My true love was true, Oh-oh-oh-oh, I, of course, replied, "Something here inside, Cannot be denied." (Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo,) (Doo-doo-doo, waaa.)
They said, "Someday you'll find, All who love are blind. Oh-oh-oh-oh, when your heart's on fire, You must realize, Smoke gets in your eyes."
So I chaffed them, And I gaily laughed, To think they could doubt my love. Yet today, my love has flown away. I am without my love. (Without my love.)
Now, laughing friends deride, Tears I cannot hide. Oh-oh-oh-oh, so I smile and say, "When a lovely flame dies, Smoke gets in your eyes." (Smoke gets in your eyes.) (Smoke gets in your eyes.) Smoke gets in your eyes.
