About Richard Stillman - musical/theatrical performer

I am an all around stage performer. Most of my videos are from shows I perform in schools,and small theatres. My favorite show is ,"The Spirit of Vaudeville" which is a partly historical partly fantastical account of the 1920's musical vaudeville performers. I have a background as a Broadway actor, musician,storyteller and song and dance man.

About this user

Most of my work life is as a creator and performer of family shows. It tends to be whimsical and uplifting. I cofounded TSF childrens theatre, the Mythmakers (a storytelling/music duo), and several shows that combine string band music,storytelling and tap dancing. These shows are booked through Encore Performing Arts. As an actor on Broadway I played the Clerk of Oxford in "Canterbury Tales", and understudied "Mummenschanz". I also received critical acclaim for my performance of the Ukulele Ike role in "Lady Be Good" at the Goodspeed Opera House in Ct. and at the Kennedy Center. I performed and wrote the music for Rip Torn's production of "Hamlet". Some of the actors I have worked with include: Geraldine Page, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Robert Townsend, Jean Marsh, Nicholas Martin and Ellis Rabb.

As a musician I play tenor banjo, mandolin, five string banjo, tenor guitar, mandola, ukulele, Highland and Spanish bagpipes, digeridoo, bones, harmonica, balalaika, Puerto Rican cuatro, and various percussion instruments.I also teach many of these from my home. As far as education goes, I have a BA in theatre from Dartmouth College. I also studied performing in schools at Columbia College. I sudied acting with Michael Howard. My tenor banjo playing was inspired by vaudeville musician Roy Smeck. Much of my music I taught myself.

I have appeared in several storytelling festivals both as a solo artist and as part of the Mythmakers with the award winning storyteller Gerald Fierst. In my vaudeville performing I do a bit of juggling, hat tricks, and rope tricks in the Will Rogers style. I also perform some of the music popularized by Ukulele Ike (the voice of Jimminy Cricket in Pinnochio) and the Scottish Vaudevilian,Harry Lauder.

I enjoy performing in senior centers and care centers. I play alot of music from the 1920's throught the 1940's and they are a great audience for this. I always feel like I have lifted them up a bit when I am done. When I'm not "at work" I have fun with my kids and the dog, and I volunteer at my church.

I have also taught theatre music and movement at several local theatres.
