Storm Chase May 18th - 28th 2011.
(I know I need a better camera)
I have always been obsessed with severe weather. I decided to go chase with Silver Lining Tours after almost 15 years of just watching videos. It was an experience that would change my life forever, for better and for worse. I saw the awesome, beautiful side of these storms and also came too close for comfort to the devastation these monsters create. I am now left with the odd feeling of a lifelong obsession crashing into an undeniable fear of the unexpected. The 2011 storm season was one of the most destructive yet. Although there were only 3 or 4 high risk days while I was there, and a below average number of tornadoes, it seemed like every tornado managed to plough through heavily populated areas. The La Nina weather phenomenon also had a play in creating very large tornadoes with three EF5 tornadoes less then a month apart, as well as dragging the destructive storms as far North East as Michigan and even New York State.
Having narrowly escaped the Joplin tornado and seeing what it did to that poor city, I am going to go back as often as I can, to learn how to be a storm spotter so I can help to get warnings out or help the victims left behind after these storms.
If you live in the Central States, PLEASE take EVERY tornado warning seriously. Huge loss of life is usually due to the inevitable "crying wolf" effect. The storms come through only for a few months at a time, during that time PLEASE take the warnings seriously. More accurate warnings are only about 10 years away, until then, we have to treat all these storms as potential killers. The USA has the best weather forecasting system in the world, please make use of it.
