After practicing law in Suffolk County, NY, I, a Democrat, was elected a District Court Judge in an overwhelmingly Republican county after Watergate. I believe that I was a damn good judge, albeit tough, but I believe a fair one, yet when I ran for reelection, I could have lost to Mickey Mouse, because by then Watergate was ancient history, and Brookhaven town returned to its historic Republican roots. I lost, but was appointed to a higher trial court, the County Court, by Gov. Hugh Carey, and was subsequently elected to the County Court with cross endorsement of both major parties for a ten year term. As a judge handling homicides, I saw some terrible things taking place, like suborned perjury, missing detectives' notes, in their trial and prosecution. By a letter in October 1985, I asked Gov. Cuomo to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate what i was seeing. The SIC (State Investigations Commission) came into the county for five years, and I, who had been the sweetheart of the police, became the enemy. Although my actions had not been political, the Republican establishment was going to make sure that I was not reelected. At the end of my term, my former law partner, then the County Democratic leader and former New York state leader, dealt away my judgeship to the Republicans for four judgeships, including my own. My family and I left Suffolk, and moved to North Carolina. That was 15 years ago. Three weeks later, I was brought back to New York, and I was awarded the prestigious Justice Thurgood Marshall award and several others. Since that time, I have been involved in TV documentaries, including "The Serial Killers," as consultant and interviewer, "A Question of Guilt," about Martin Tankleff, as creative director and host, and a 3 1/2 hour documentary on the 17th Infantry in the Korean War, which I created and hosted. My late wife of 41 years, Lenore, and I were invited to Hollywood by a major producer, where a planned movie project about my life never came to fruition. Lenore passed in 1996, and I remarried to my present wife, Nancy, who had lost her husband two months before Lenore passed. I decided to become a tap dancer, winning several gold medals in NC Senior Games, and generally have enjoyed life in North Carolina under very different circumstances. My motto at age 74 is: "I will continue to do as much as I can, as long as I can!"
