Since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita tore through south Louisiana in 2005, Rep. Melancon's top priority in Congress has been securing federal support and funding for hurricane recovery, better hurricane protection, and coastal restoration. In 2006, Melancon worked to pass legislation giving Louisiana a significant share of offshore oil and gas drilling royalties to provide billions for future hurricane protection and coastal restoration projects.
Rep. Melancon is also a leader in the fiscally conservative Democratic Blue Dog Coalition. Formed in 1995, the Blue Dogs represent the mainstream values of the American public and are dedicated to a core set of beliefs that transcend partisan politics, including a deep commitment to the financial stability and national security of the United States.
Rep. Melancon serves on the Energy and Commerce and Budget Committees in the House of Representatives.
