Best base damage sword in the game is a sword you get from thieve's guild, it is a daedric weapon I believe, from oblivion. When you go into mercer frey's house it is in a case next to his desk.

Hey, just an FYI, to get the invisible mode option in the options screen, you have to type the dwarvish word for friend in stage 6. The word that gandalf used to open the doors to moria. I'm not gonna say what word it is though.

The grotto is part of a quest... there is a pillar in your chambers I believe that opens up a small storage room with a journal, read it, get a quest... tells you exactly where to go. Only reason you wouldn't notice the secret door is if you don't check every castle you go to for secret passages ...
