The first Operation Flashpoint, called Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, was developed by Bohemia Interactive back in June 2001, and published by Codemasters.

Later on, it was developed as VBS - Virtual battlespace simulator, first used and bought by the United States Marine Corps to to teach doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures during squad and platoon offensive and so on.

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis won many critical acclaim for It's realism and simulation. The game featured a wide variety of Cold War-era equipment; assault rifles to machine guns, specialized helicopters, aircraft and even civilian vehicles.weaponary, jeeps, trucks, patrol boats, tanks.

A part from ingame features, the game also featured Mission Editor and bigscale multiplayer plus SDK - ability for the players to mod the game free.

Because of legal issues Between Bohemia Interactive and Codemasters, the two broke up. However, Codemasters owns the intelectual property to the name Operation Flashpoint.

Therefore, Bohemia Interactive released a sequel to the first Operation Flashpoint with another name, called ArmA: Armed Assault, while in meantime, Codemasters developed Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, promoting it as the orginal sequel to Operation Flashpoint.

Bohemia Interactive later released a statement saying that ''It is not right to promote this game as the official sequel.

Today, Codemasters are turning Operation Flashpoint in another direction, from the military simulation and freeroam gameplay that the first game was all about to a more arcade-like gameplay experience, with less freedom and realism, still claiming it is the orginal sequel by using the brands name, wich have been heavily critized by the players that once enjoyed the first game ten years ago.
