NSA is an amateur folk-jazz and jamgrass outfit founded by Diptanshu Roy (mandolin) and Sujoy Chakravarty (guitar). The two friends got together in 2008 and fuelled by their love of gypsy swing, bluegrass and bebop started playing music together as a duo. They performed at Jadavpur University as well as a few private shows that highlighted their original material along with jazz, bluegrass and folk standards.
This year they have a new member. Vinayak Das Gupta, founder and erstwhile member of Kolkata based band Glass Onion, has added his acoustic guitar stylings to the mix, thickening the groove and freeing everyone up to be more experimental with the music.
But NSA is not about individuals, or sky-high egos, or of pompous virtuosity. It is about improvisation and taking the music forward. It is about like minded people getting together to exchange musical ideas and engage in musical conversation. They have a line-up that is fluid and many friends who share their lives and have been a part of their musical upbringing will no doubt join in the groove at a later date.
Finally, as amateurs who are not really interested in commercializing their passion, they have the freedom to explore their interest in making improvisational music that meets high standards of artistic merit.
