A secret religious order plots to start a war between two vampire clans, but who is manipulating who?
Director's Commentary: Words can't express how happy I am with "The Clans". When the script was originally written I had no idea it would become the rock solid drama that it turned out to be. Directing was one of the most important things to me. For The Clans I spent 2 months casting and rehearsing with my actors, driving the mood of the story. Because there is so much dialog I knew cinematography would be very straight forward, leaving more room for the actors to shine. Although there weren't any tricky camera techniques used, lighting was by far one of the most important elements of this movie. Every scene is divided by color, such as the council scene is white and black, and the Octavian scenes are soft white and orange. This was to emphasis the division growing between the characters throughout the story. Because everything was shot at nighttime I had more difficulty in getting the correct light temperature, but had more direct control over the lights themselves. Sound was my problem child with this movie. Much of the dialog and sound bites had to be adjusted, and the music score was completely re-written about 3 times to fit the different pacing during the edit. Costumes and art design was probably the most enjoyable part of pre production. I live for getting actors into different outfits and trying on different makeup, and I think it shows in the final product. Overall I am very happy with "The Clans" and I feel it is my best drama to date.
Note on Vampires: When "The Clans" was first written our culture only had to endure the "Twilight" series. But now, with t.v. shows, books, and movies going crazy with vampires it seems to be an overdone genre, and I can't help but feel with this film I have contributed to the unoriginality of modern entertainment. I assure you, "The Clans" was made long before vampires were so popular, and I genuinely feel let down that some people will brush my film off as "following the crowd and selling out." Upon release of "The Clans" I swear to never touch the subject of vampires again until the fad has blown over.

Held against their will two strangers must work to survive. One blind, the other deaf, they quickly discover communication is their biggest handicap.
Written by: Rhett Cutrell Directed by: R.D. Womack II Produced by: John Wilbanks
Director's Commentary: When I was first hired to direct "The Human Handicap" my initial reaction was "Wow...there isn't a lot of dialog here. Ok. I'll need to make it visually appealing." As so that's what I endeavored to do. Sticking to my normal style I used low angel shots with emphasis on high contrast lighting. However, I figured I'd up the stakes a little bit and push it even farther. Many of the shots are at an extreme angel, either high, low, or tilted. This was to make it more visually intriguing and to set the viewer a little off, as the story itself is somewhat unhinged. We also incorporated tons of moving shots, most of which are so subtle you probably won't notice the first time watching. Lighting, as I said, was high contrast but in addition to this we lit and color corrected everything to be green. To me, the script made me uneasy and sick, and no color represents that better than flat green with crushed blacks. "The Human Handicap" was really brought together by the sound design and color correction, both of which infinitely improved the quality. Hope you enjoy :)

Director's Commentary:
Color was by far the most important thing in this video, bringing all the base emotions of the piece to the surface. Its obvious to say the black and white is a representation of a lost and cold feeling, while the scenes with color were used to represent happiness and life with her lost love. However, this is only half of it. Every black and white scene was catered to be high contrast. This means the clothing, the set, and the lights were all purposely used to bring out deeper blacks and brighter white, so it would be a more drastic change in mood. As for all the scenes of me playing, we used nighttime as a way to directly control color temperature. I was lit with blue and purple, both cold colors to amplify the effect of the sad music. Speaking of which, Silence the Dead is one of my favorite songs off my album The Winter Gates of Mourning Although simple, I feel it is one of my most emotionally driving pieces and has enormous power. Overall I think this video is my best music video so far, and I hope to use this as a base for further improvement.

A documentary on the Oktoberfest celebration in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Made for my digital documentary class.
Directors Commentary: This is a very typical documentary; voice over, slates, b-roll with testimonials. I feel thats why Im not satisfied with it as a whole. Im not a very good non-fiction filmmaker. I dont have as much fun producing non-fiction pieces, and directing them is very boring to me. Still, I try as hard as I can with documentaries and somehow always come up short. I feel as though I need to work harder at capturing the story of an event and making my audience connect with the people in my films. In a fiction piece this is very easy to achieve but in non-fiction, or at least for me, its a near impossible goal. Seeing as I made this for my digital documentary class hopefully I will improve with time, but, as they say, Ill stick to my day job and continue producing more fiction pieces. Its a solid, textbook, documentary and overall it looks good; great framing, b-roll is spotless and the music fits. But it lacks excitement, so if anyone has any suggestions or advice, please let me know.

Commentary: As a Filmmaker and a musician, sometimes I get a little worried when I let another director interpret my art, especially as piece of music that's near and dear to me as Dim the Candle. However, I think Mr. Mark Holmes perfectly captured the true essence and message behind the song, and his style of shooting fit perfectly with the music. Dim the Candle is all about the creative process, losing yourself completely, suffering from anxiety and frustration, and emerging with a beautiful piece of art. I hope you enjoy the music and the video.
