Increasingly, vascular stent technology is moving to smaller devices with micron-resolution features. In addition, new, but difficult to machine, bio-absorbable polymers are being used for a number of coronary stent applications. Raydiance Smart Light provides a revolutionary tool for athermally ablating these tiny stents. In this video, Raydiance ultrafast technology is used to machine this bio-stent with 150 micron walls and a 3.5 mm diameter. The struts created with Smart Light are 80 microns wide.

A Raydiance ultrafast laser is used to athermally ablate the enamel and into the dentin of a human tooth. Ultrafast ablation enables very precise machining of materials without transferring heat to the surrounding areas. This is particularly relevant to dental procedures as the technology has the potential to enable procedures without anesthesia.
