Barbaro came very close to surviving, which was sad.

I had an exacta box of Barbaro and Bernardini, who I liked better than Barbaro. I wake up and see the result. I say to my Mom "Barbaro didn't hit the board?"

Mom said: "It's much worse than that."

Bernardini was the best horse no matter what. Nothing would ahve beaten him on this day.

The experience with Ruffian is why Barbaro woke up in a swimming pool after his surgery. Indeed, Ruffian almost saved Barbaro indirectly.
