A department of the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Allan is notorious for its role in Project MKULTRA, the Cold War-era brainwashing experiments funded by the CIA and the Canadian government. Using a combination of electro-convulsive therapy, insulin shock therapy, forced isolation, induced comas, depatterning, psychic driving, and the use of hallucinogenic drugs including LSD and paralysis-inducing narcotics such as curare, these experiments were part of the the Agency's initiative to develop mind control techniques.
