"He was the most thoughtful, caring ...," Bryan Fitch, Dalton's father, said before breaking off midsentence. "I don't even have the vocabulary to express what I want to express."

Michael Dalton Fitch, a rising senior at Crest High School, died Saturday at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Police say the teen, who went by Dalton, tried to break up a fight at Ocean Lakes Campground. That decision cost Dalton Fitch his life.

Lt. Raul Denis with the Horry County Police Department said Dalton Fitch saw Adam Taylor Dwiggins, 18, of Shelby, fighting with a woman in the street of the campground and tried to stop the altercation. Dwiggins stabbed Dalton Fitch with a knife, then ran away, Denis said.

'He was like that'

Dalton Fitch's mother, Tracy, was shocked when she heard of her son's death. But she said Sunday she wasn't surprised that her son died trying to help someone in need.

"He was like that," she said. "He's done it before."
