About this user
I'm Raina Vann. As host and writer for "Inside RPS," a televised Richmond, Virginia community access program which highlights Richmond City Public Schools' achievements and dedication to academic excellence, I have the privledge of doing what I love: communicating.
Avid speaker and communicator are quite possibly the best descriptors for the purpose of this channel since I've creatively employed my mind and voice from the classroom to the boardroom.
I find interviews to be an interesting way to learn about what makes a person tick. What better way to connect?
Current favorite word?
I read an article recently and the author wrote "moniker." I've heard it before; however, in that moment it just made me smile. Moniker: a person's name, especially nickname or alias.
How do you avoid saying "um?"
I'm sure I say it more than I'd like to admit. Although, when I'm focused on speaking, I constantly search the corners of my mind for every word I can think of to illustrate a point. I literally search while speaking. Reading truly helps. Writers can be very creative.
Large or small audiences?
I'll happily take what I can get! The mirrored audience is often my most accessible.
Tips for nervousness?
There are times when I've thought about the time required for the speech and compared it to something else with the equivalent time. Most often, I appreciate the rush. (This coming from the student who loved vocabulary flash cards and searched endlessly for the perfect travel dictionary.)
What do you do to challenge your speaking and writing skills?
Preparing weekly for "Inside RPS" helps. In 2010, joined Toastmasters International. I've learned how imperfect I am as the City Stars' chapter President.

Favorite resources?
Google, dictionary.com and grammarbook.com are my go-to sites.
What's next?
With the help of a little sleep, possibly an upcoming 10K. Possibly. With fewer than six weeks to train, I remain hopeful.
