Scars are a part of life. Physical or mental, they are what defines the most basic parts of a person€™s character. Unlike callouses which harden the skin and deaden it€™s senses, scars display it€™s weakness. Some times the scar is harder than the skin, it protects the weak place from being injured a second time. There are times when a scar is keratinized, raised and discolored, scars that loudly declare that the skin of an area has been torn and desperately stretched back together. The worst though, the very worst scars are the ones that remain soft. The vulnerable pink tissue shines like a beacon of insecurity, like a beautifully decorated target that will shatter with one shot. There is no extra protection gained from the pain that caused it. There is only a new, weaker place, that can be injured again ten times more simply than before. A glaring, recognizable weakness. Physical or mental, a scar is forever. It may fade, but it will always be present. Like Still Born Smiles
