There is so much packed into this episode it seems like a full length film. Hazel is treated like a lady at the conclusion because she dealt with Miss Roberts as Lady Marjorie would have: with grace and compassion.

Thanks for uploading these. I remember watching the show with my mother when it first aired in the US, but I came in after this episode, so I never knew Lady Marjorie. My mother adored her.I love how cleverly the writers slip in the name of the fateful ship at the very end.

I'm lucky enough to see her live here in San Francisco. I'm most amazed by her legs and feet. Every step she takes, every extension, is prepared so musically and has purpose and meaning. This goes way beyond technique.

He telescopes the 4th and 3rd bars before the end to one measure; Horowitz streches them out to 4 measures. Odd.

Balances are good, virtuosity impressive . . . but I find this performance lacking in poetry. Probably because it's much too fast.

When I was a kid (late 50s, early 60s) all the epic Hollywood films had intermissions: Ben Hur, El Cid, Spartacus. In Bollywood films they tend to be at the moment of highest tension.

Through all the scratchiness one can detect a phenomenal performance of "Komm, Hoffnung." Lehmann goes all out, and Toscanini allows her great freedom.

Fascinating to hear her in this repertoire. As always, she throws herself completely into the meaning of the words. I just love her.

Unlike so many others, I do not find this performance by Callas to be inferior to her earlier recordings. If anything, I find her singing more nuanced and delicate in this recording. And Ludwig is fantastic.

Also a wonderful score by Franz Waxman. In the last scenes he introduces a motif--the high continuous trill--that Richard Strauss used so brilliantly in his opera Salome: the same character Norma imagines she is filming. Just a little detail, one of many that make this such a great film.
