Caledonia TV start up sequence (mock)
One of three proposed start up sequences on film from failed ITV Central Scotland franchise bidders Caledonia Television (circa 1981).

Nobody in 1981 would have used a bit of kitsch 50s library music written by an Englishman. Caledonia TV (and I knew the people involved) would have had something bright and zappy more like Central's startup music. No way would Caledonia have used a Lion rampant, since that was STV's logo for muc...

Mason Williams is perhaps the most talented man I have ever known. Not only can he write, sing, play guitar; but he is also kind, generous, and a damn fine guy. Of course this is his best known work (and so it ought to be) but he has an enormous repertoire of original songs and is a very fine v...

Well. Here's where it came from. I had originally recorded it off air on a VHS tape. I needed space on the VHS and dubbed it on to a low-band U-Matic tape. Then back to VHS (goodbye chroma, goodbye most of the audio). Then Lucy Woodward (at Video Ark) restored it and put it back onto a VHS. ...

Eezlewax's remark about middle 'England' reminds me of the opening night of Radio Clyde. After I'd hosted the very first programme (on Hogmanay from 10.30pm - 2am), I was the only person in the building who could operate the switchboard, and so I was stuck there until dawn! Round about 3am some...

But here's an odd thing. Both the quadrant slide with Jimmy Nairn's voiceover (re-edited in this very studio where I now sit) and the tartan prototype came from my personal collection. Only copies extant. So - and I think you can all see where I'm going here - who did you nick this material fr...
It's nonsense to say that ITV continuity announcers were "actors". That may have been the case in the 1950s, but by the 70s they were all highly professional broadcasters - many with years of experience - often graduating from local radio.
