Sergei Rachmaninov - Short Biography
Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninov was born on the 1st April 1873. He showed early talent as a pianist. Sergei was sent to studyat the Saint Petersburg Conservatory before moving to Moscow to study piano under Nikolai Zverev and Alexander Siloti. He also studied harmony and counterpoint. He also showed great skill in composition. While still a student, he wrote the one-act opera, Aleko, for which he was awarded a gold medal in composition, his First Piano Concerto, and a set of piano pieces, Morceaux de Fantaisie (Op. 3, 1892), which includes the famous Prelude in C sharp minor.
Everything was going well for Rachmaninov until the failure of his first symphony, the conductor (Glazunov) was rumoured to be drunk while conducting! This sent Rachmaninov in to depression. This depression lasted until he met Nikolai Dahl. Dahl encouraged Rachmaninov to continue composing and one of Rachmaninov's most famous pieces, the second piano concerto, was composed and dedicated to Dahl.
Rachmaninov made his first tour in the USA in 1909 with his brand new Piano Concerto 3. Rachmaninov had also recently composed his second symphony which was a tremendous hit.
Rachmaninov left Russia and set for living in the USA. In his time in the USA, he composed loads of major pieces, including the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, his fourth piano concerto and the third symphony. In the USA, Rachmaninov didn't compose as much as he had in Russia. He concentrated on being a pianist. He is famous for his large hands, being able to reach a long way apart on the piano, (Start at middle C, go up an octave and go to the next A!). Rachmaninov's final composition was his Symphonic Dances. He died of melanoma in Beverly Hills, four days before his 70th birthday on the 28th March 1943.
