About Me:

Since 1975, I've studied the bible, in an attempt to find the historical and cultural setting of the first Jesus movement of 34 CE. Let's face it Jesus did not pick 12 of the sharpest tools in the shed. Nor did Jesus pick the wealthy or high ranking officials of His day either, to spread a message that has been so profound, that not only did it change the Roman calendar, but conquered that brutal military empire as well.
So how did group of itinerate preachers change their world in 300 years with no instruction manual, except some Hebrew writings, they were not bound to obey; a few historical documents and letters to friends. Seems kind of moot doesn't it? Let's look further at what they had to work with: they did not have a cultural specific teaching; literally the resurrection can be taught in any culture, in any form of government and to any age group. Adherents can eat anything, go anywhere, be anything in the work-force, except a prostitute; male or female. Through the ages religious institutions have matrixed and categorized every aspect of Christian life, but those teachings (doctrines and creeds) have only stifled what the original group of misfits taught. The first 300 years of Christendom was fraught with persecution after persecution, nobody was safe. Their writings were burned and their properties seized, to the point where even some renounced their belief, some hid their faith and many went underground (literally) to practice their beliefs. Those who left Judaism were considered apostates; those who left Greco-Roman Paganism were thought to be apostates and foolish and those who would rather lose their material procession for a dead-man's promises, were the most pitiable.
By the 260 CE, the Romans had killed most of the bishops of Rome and had forced the Christians to go underground to hold secret meetings in catacombs and house churches; complete with passwords and codes. So why did it flourish when it was hidden from view? It spread throughout the known world at that time because, something else was at work.
After all my research, it had to be something that defied human logic and went right for the heart of man needs. In all actuality, it had to be something other than just the teachings of a man, some claimed to have been raised from the dead. Was it the fear of death? Spartans and Macedonians were not afraid of death at all. Was it the promise of the 'afterlife'? Hmmm, whether you were Egyptian, Greek, Roman or Persian, each had an 'afterlife' belief that promised solace to the dying. However intricate these beliefs and teachings were at the time in the 1st century CE, none, that's right none, reconciled God and man. Man could now have peace with God and a certainty of being cleansed of all his human faults. Man could now enter into the Kingdom of God, without money, reservation or going through numerous tests of character and receive a body that would never get hungry, sick or die. But just knowing this would not account for the rapid spread of the teachings of a man, who claimed to be the son of a god. It was the Spirit of this son that drove the movement. What is most remarkable; is that this Spirit chose anybody and everybody who would yield their life, even if the persons beliefs where not in line with the original teachings (as we know them today). Wow! This early Christian god was not particular at all. And to think, this assurance of peace and eternal life didn't cost a thing. Well, almost.
