About Me:
home made productions, self sufficiency.
been building rhythms since ... a long time
about 5,000, rhythms to get through, in this set.[not including accoustic tracks]
most of the musical selections here are raw, outtakes and have been run through basic equipment in a basic studio, lo-fi business, in awkward circumstances as regards the making of music - such is my present situation.
mainly the rhythm tracks are given a rudimentary arrangement fit for present purpose - so no drum fills, etcetera, and have generally just added a touch of echo to make the rawness, and small sound pallette, a little less dry.unfortunately yhe effects can only be added to the stereo mix not to the individual tracks so yep, its a broad brush.
how do i go about making music?
sometimes i start with a melody, sometimes a lyric idea, sometimes a beat, sometimes a rhythm pattern and work something out from there.
when i use a preexisting bassline or famous melody sometimes i tell you what it is, sometimes i can't cos i dont know its name, sometimes i really cant for various reasons, and sometimes i won't - sometimes you have to listen to hours of crazy music to find something useful - thats the discipline, the joy, the exasperation, of the journey. anyways when you find the source of something its a great feeling.
of course some of you out there in internet land will know where a musical element comes from ... which is one use for a knowing smile
of course, some of the rhythms ... well lets just say they need work.
personal musical foundation:
i was raised around folk music and so that, i suppose, is my foundation in a musical sense. since then though have travelled a lot in modern branded music.
production training/technology training:
as you can probably tell, i havn't been through any formal training or school, [ i did apply- cos i knew i needed it] - mustnt have fit the boxes.
on this music road, informal, backstreet, downtown or country, off the beaten track - anywhere but uptown, schooltown or official town! - theres been a few people who have helped me a great deal - or who at least could speak my language so to speak.
thus, amidst the usual cliques and knowledge coveters, unambitious natures, content with the musical palette available for consumption and their relationship to it - vested interest - "musical systemites?" - i give thanks for two people especially, pilou and bionic, heartical and ambitious people and good friends both. [but then as a selector i always loved sound]
there are a few others i should have mentioned, let me see ... matic, mill, fishman, velvet, robba, apple, and ribs.
commenting...
feel free to leave any useful comments on the music some of it i will alresdy realise, but constructive criticism is most welcome.
also, if anyone can direct me to any youtube vids relating to music production, linking midi to outboard samplers , etc, i would be very grateful as it would help me break through the arrested development [better sounds, less noise, ability to effect individual tracks etc] - ie in case you hadnt guessed already, i know enough to know that theres a lot i dont know.
about the voice...
its a long time since i used my own voice, which at in its best moments is just about average, in the main it is used to establish ideas and workability of a concept. hopefully it will get better with practice.
obviously if i could have afforded a better singer - had a place for them to record - or more appropriate voice, i would have used them instead on some [all] of the songs.
Q: why put out music thats unfinished? or demo?
A: ah the perfection or creation question. for me with ropey equipment, troublesome environment, and arrested knowledge, the emphasis for obvious reasons had to be on creation - even if the mixes or nuances, suffer.
secondly and more importantly, in one city in one decade, hundreds of people ... making thousands of tracks each ... many much better than my own - how much of that, scaled up, have you heard? so theres a testament of a kind here to those who never get an output through shyness, lack of self belief, system machination [yu know dat!], etc
Q how come you are on youtube and not myspace? a] i dont take myself TOO seriously, and thats what i like about youtube, the sublime and the ridiculous side by side.
theres more i could tell you, maybe another time
anyways, got to make the best of what you've got.
self sufficiency.
you get the idea.
