About Me:
The original 'Friends' were organized as a volunteer band of local citizens in 1974 with the sole intent of fixing and repainting the Kingston Station. The group reformed in 1989 after a tragic fire destroyed the east waiting room in 1988.
The Kingston Station today is currently 54th in sales volume out of all the Amtrak stations nationwide, is held in high esteem holding status as one of the first demonstration projects under the first ISTEA legislation and is has been on the register of historic places since 1975. Over 160,000 passengers boarded or arrive at Kingston annually.
The Rhode Island Railroad Museum uses the west end of the station and receives over eight thousand visits a year. Amtrak uses the east waiting room for it's passenger business.
The current directorship is under Dr. Frank Heppner who is the chairman for the Friends of Kingston Station Inc.
Volunteers have contributed thousands of hours to make this a prized location as both a working station and a place to encounter the link to railroading history and on going railroad safety as well.
