The thing about XIII, is that it doesn't start until 30 hours in. Until then the story makes little sense, and it's a successive series of battles. After 20 hours you can choose how you fight, then after 30 you actually have a choice over what to do next, although not much choice. Once you get to boss battles, such as Eidolon challenges, the first attempt is futile, as there's no knowing what you have to do. Some bosses, such as Cid Reines, are excercies in repetition, where you do the same commands for 30 minutes. That's why XIII has a bad reputation. Personally I loved it, it had interesting characters, beautiful music and graphics as well as one of the finest battle systems in the series. However, that's all it had going for it, something which XIII-2 seems to correct.
