Most people want to be good people, or at least to think they are good people. People are also lazy and averse to moral and intellectual growth. Organized religion offers pre-packaged morality, and claims to have a monopoly on morality. It's one of the best marketing tools religion has.

The main reason Jesus was not a socialist is that he was born 1,800 years before the development of socialist thought. You can't just simplistically compare the role of government at the height of the Roman Empire with the role of government in the modern state.
