I am the mother of a little boy with prune belly syndrome (PBS). PBS is a rare birth disorder in which 1 in 40,000 children are affected. Prune belly syndrome is a whole continuum from very mild to very severe. It can be simply a lax abdominal wall, undecended testicles, and an enlarged, thick walled bladder. It can, however, be a lifethreatening disorder resulting predominantly in lacking abdominal muscles and renal defects, with a possibility of heart, lung, bone, hearing, and other defects as well. Many of those affected with PBS must endure many hospitalizations and surgeries. Many DO live a normal, satisfying life also.
