The Portland Youth Philharmonic, founded in 1924, is America's first youth orchestra. Today there are four ensembles with around three hundred members. Players range in age from seven to 23 and come from schools throughout the region. Membership is based on competitive auditions that take place each June and August for the upcoming school year. The four ensembles present a total of 22 concerts in the Portland Center for the Performing Arts and throughout the state.
