This video covers PortSide NewYork's multimedia exhibit about an extraordinary and little-known 9/11 story: how mariners stepped up and evacuated some half million people from Manhattan on 9/11, supplied Ground Zero, removed all the trade center rubble and ran emergency ferry routes for two years. The exhibit was mounted on the historic ship LILAC. More on the exhibit at http://bit.ly/mar...
Video includes interviews with Paul Alter, Paul Amico, Jessica DuLong, Betsy Haggerty, Peter Johansen, Rich Naruszewicz, Alan Olmsted, Carolina Salguero
The video includes still photos of 9/11 and Ground Zero and the exhibit by Carolina Salguero.

During 2011, PortSide re-designed a kayak storage container thanks to pro bono design services won in a desigNYC competition. This "BoatBox" is where the Red Hook Boaters store their kayaks in Valentino Park, Red Hook, Brooklyn.
PortSide's goal is to make the container educational and expand amenities for boaters and general public. Our design adds physical elements: a green roof, a shade, a boat storage rack, and seating. Our design adds info: safety info about boating and fishing, interpretive info about local history and ships visible from the park, info about street litter and how it hits the beaches, how to prevent that and info about the Red Hook Boaters beach clean up program.
The design has been approved by the Red Hook Boaters. As of October 2011, PortSide is working closely with the Parks Department on conceptual design, and we are enthusiastic about how it is going.

PortSide had a great time the Red Hook Fest at Valentino Park on 6/4/11.
Matt Perricone, owner and captain of the tug Cornell which towed the Mary Whalen around so much last summer, invented a line toss expo-game.
Matt taped one of our cleat paperweights to one of our baskets, put a splice in a line, and voila! an event that was popular with kids and adults.
What this displayed was the way workboat crew have to throw lines over distances when they tie up tugs and barges instead of actually touching the cleat the way it is done on little pleasure boats.
PortSide's marine hardware inventory (the final inventory of Cowhey Brothers Hardware) includes full scale cleats, so if we can find a way to move hundred-pounders, we'll bring those to future events along with full scale lines for added line throwing challenge.
