On August 1st, 1944 the Polish underground army, the Armia Krajowa launched an Uprising in a desperate attempt to liberate Warsaw from German occupation.
The battle was meant to last only four days. It lasted 63 days. Thousands of Poles died fighting -- and waiting for Allied intervention. None came.
