Antiope is an asteroid, the 90th asteroid to be discovered, and the first asteroid shown to be a binary system; its two components, each about 85 km across, are separated by about 170 km and complete an orbit around one another every 16.5 hours. It was discovered in 1866 by the German astronomer R. Lutherit and is named after Antiope from Greek mythology, though it is disputed as to whether this is Antiope the Amazon or Antiope the mother of Amphion and Zethus.
Antiope the Amazon queen, was the only Amazon who ever got married. According to Plutarch she was captured by stratagem by Theseus, married him and followed him to Athens, but the Amazons waged war upon the city. Eventually the combatants made peace, and Antiope had a son with Theseus, named Hippolytus, but soon she fell in a battle, fighting on his side, and her tomb was pointed out on the south side of the acropolis until the days of Pausanias.
The other Antiope was a princess of the Boiotian town of Hyria, a daughter of prince Nykteus, or maybe of the river god Asopos. She was seduced by Jupiter, and to escape her father's anger fled to Mount Cytheron, where she bore the twins Amphion and Zethus. After many adventures, suffering and wanderings, she finally marries king Phocus.
