Legendary Latvian pianist Vilma Cirule
( pron. Tzirule) was born on May 11, 1923 in Valmiera.
She began to study piano at the local music school at the age of six. Very early Vilma Cirule was recognized for her exceptional musicality and talent.
. Later Vilma Cirule continued her studies at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian State Conservatory with the prominent piano professor Pauls Schuberts.
She received her concert pianist's diploma in 1944.
All her life Vilma Cirule has been a soloist, chamber musician and an accompanist at the Latvian State Radio as well as Latvian State Philharmony.
Vilma Cirule was also teaching at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian State Academy of Music in Riga. Many recognized Latvian singers such as Janis Zabers, Inesa Galante and others have studied in her vocal chamber music class.
The extraordinary pianist Vilma Cirule has performed in North America, Germany, Finland, Albany, Poland, Bulgaria, Island and many Republics of the former Soviet Union.
Vilma Cirule has played many concerts as a soloist with orchestra, and chamber solo recitals. For many years she has been a brilliant accompanist for outstanding Latvian singers such as Leonarda Daine and Zermena - Heine Vagnere.
Vilma Cirule has presented numerous world premiere recordings and performances of compositions by distinguished Latvian composers.
During her artistic life Vilma Cirule has received several awards.
The latest of them were: Three Star Medal (2004), Honorable Professor of Latvia State Academy of Music (2005.), Her name has been engraved on the list of Professors of Latvian State Academy of Music.
The most recent and significant award was „The Grand Music Award 2006" -- for lifetime contribution in music.
Until 2010 the great pianist enjoyed her accompanist's responsibilities at the Ridze music school. Recently Vilma Cirule has decided to just look back at her extensive musical life and play piano only for enjoyment of her friends and herself.
