I set up this page for the specific purpose of documenting and recording my transformation from dry, damaged, chemically treated hair, to healthy, naturally curly tresses.

Why I decided to go natural:

After another winter of dry, brittle hair which had noticeably broken off near the crown of my head, I was online looking for a wig. In doing this, I very randomly came across some forum or article, can't remember which, that was asking why black women straightened their hair. The question was posed by a non-black person, and I don't remember all that it said, but I remember that it annoyed me. I kinda rolled my eyes and said, "We perm our hair cause its easier, duh."

But, in the following days I just kept thinking about it and the more I did, the more reasons I kept coming up with as to why we perm our hair. The more I did that, the more it seemed like I was making excuses! It was quite a revelation! The bottom-line reality, for me, was that I permed my hair: A) to conform, and: B) because I didn't know how to care for my hair in its natural state. I had given the excuse that it was easier, but easier compared to what? I had never cared for my hair in its natural state.

I have always tried to teach my children that there is NOTHING wrong with being black and when I thought about it, I came to the conclusion that constantly changing my hair from its natural texture, (a texture that is largely unique to black people) was a direct contradiction to what I was trying to teach them. I considered the matter for a day or so before I started looking into natural hair care. It wasn't long after that that decided I would go back to my natural hair! And few days later I did the Big Chop, and never looked back! My hair is now softer, growing faster and healthier than ever!

Perhaps one day my hair will grow down my back, or maybe it will never go past my shoulders. At this point, there's really no way to know. However, there is one thing I know without a shadow of doubt...

I will never perm my hair again!
