PML is an organization of Filipino men in tokyo, which aim is to foster camaraderie and brotherhood among kababayans in the filipino community.A Glimpse of The Philippine Mens League
The Philippine Mens League, called PML for short, and is an association of Filipino men in Japan which aims to foster brotherhood, unity and camaraderie. It is a registered member of the Philippine Assistance Group, an umbrella organization of Filipino associations in Japan more popularly known as PAG.
PML was formed in 1988, a transformation from what used to be the Philippine Drivers Association in Tokyo. Its first set of officers, led by Mr. Hadji Radjie followed by the following: 1990-1994- Mr. Rodolfo Labrador; 1994-1996- Mr. Crisostomo V. Malantic; 1996-1997- Mr. Rodrigo Retuya; 1997-1998 Mr. Rico Gonzales; 1998-2001- Mr. Felix Semilla; 2001-2002- Mr. Robert Menor; 2002-2003- Mr. Bernard C. Yumo; 2003-2004- Mr. Adonis Chavez; 2006-2008- Mr. Bernard C. Yumo, were all inducted by Philippine Embassy officials in Tokyo. Membership has since grown to 160, with new members being continuously invited to join. On May 11 this year, PML celebrated its 20th anniversary with the induction of its new set of officers.
As part of activities to promote brotherhood, unity and camaraderie, PML has been organizing bowling, Dart and basketball tournaments, sometimes in collaboration with PAG, as well as sightseeing trips to different places in Japan. Its basketball team has participated in various basketball leagues in and outside of Tokyo and had landed second in last years Philippine Assistance Group Basketball League which was held in Yokohama. PMLs bowling team also won second place in the Saitama bowling tournament which was also held last year.
PML also formed a band in 1994 which has since been performing in various events, including the Family Day celebrations of the Philippine Embassy. It has also done mini concerts for charity. Part of the proceeds of these mini concerts was donated in 1999 to the Alay Batang Lansangan project of then First Lady Loi Ejercito-Estrada. Other donations, including used clothes and other things collected by PML, have been sent to certain calamity stricken places in the Philippines.
PML endeavors to keep its organization strong and constantly reminded of its commitment to promote its aims. While it is often difficult to gather all members during its events because of the nature of work of a majority of its members who are Embassy Drivers, it ensures that there is communication among its members. With the help of technology, broadcast e-mails are being sent out to reach PML members. The association is hopeful that more Filipino men in Japan will join and actively participate in its various activities. Identification Cards with lifetime validity are now being issued to PML members.
