If you take a very fine, dry powder such as cornflour (corn starch), or Plaster of Paris, you can make very sharp impressions in it.
Also, gravity on the moon is one sixth of that on Earth, so impressions in the dust are less likely to collapse.

This reduces the vocals, but in most cases doesn't actually remove them. There's no amount of processing that you could do to remove the vocals without killing some of the music at the same time.
