The Azerbaijanis are a Turkic people living mainly in South Azerbaijan and the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as in the neighbourhood states, Georgia, Russia (Dagestan) and formerly Armenia. Commonly referred to as Azerbaijani Turks[38][39] (Azerbaijani: Azərbaycan türkləri), they also live in a wider area on the Caucasus. The Azerbaijani people are predominantly Shia Muslim[40] and have a various other heritages in addition of indigenous Caucasians.
The Azerbaijani language unifies Azerbaijani Turks, and is mutually intelligible with Turkmen, Qashqai, Gagauz and Turkish (including the dialects spoken by the Iraqi Turkmen), all of which belong to Oghuz, or Western, group of Turkic languages.
Azerbaijan, a nation with a majority Turkic[15][16] and Shia[17] population, is a secular and a unitary republic with an ancient and historic cultural heritage. Azerbaijan is one of the six independent Turkic states as well as the active members of the Turkic Council and the TÜRKSOY community.
