Infamous documentary circa 1940 chronicles the bizarre medical experiments conducted at Moscow's Institute of Experimental Physiology and Therapy in which surgeons animated dissected organs, brought dead animals back to life, kept a severed dog's head alive in a tray, and grafted the head and legs of a puppy onto an adult dog. (For what possible reason aside from having watched too many "Frankenstein" movies one can only guess.) Made all the more disturbing by the clinical black and white photography and the droning, matter-of-fact narration by British biologist John Burdon Sanderson Haldane, F.R.S. (Fellow of the Royal Society). The actual surgical procedures are thankfully never shown, however the after effects are plenty horrific. Images of a severed dog's head reacting unhappily to being poked and prodded aren't easily forgotten. There's not much in the way of actual gore, though sensitive viewers may find the material upsetting. Film is in the Public Domain. From the Prelinger Archives. http://www.prelin...

Between 1979 and 1986, Russia's Lenfilm Studios produced a series of television films based on the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. As with the BBC's popular contemporary series "Sherlock," each episode combined elements from several of Conan Doyle's original stories, though care was taken to preserve the spirit of of the material. Though not strictly canonical, the series is a favorite among fans and is regarded as one of best and most interesting adaptations of Holmes's adventures, rendered all the more authentic by Lenfilm's meticulous recreation of Victorian England.
Lenfilm's "Sherlock Holmes" was the most popular series in the history of Soviet television, and starred Vasily Livanov as the legendary consulting detective and Vitaly Solomin as his redoubtable sidekick, Dr. Watson--a role for which Solomin has been universally praised as one of the most authentic and amusing of all Dr. Watsons. Many consider Livanov's Holmes to be one of the finest interpretations of Conan Doyle's eccentric hero. Aficionados have noted that of all the actors to have played the part, it is Livanov who most closely resembles the famous Sydney Paget drawings that accompanied Conan Doyle's original stories in Strand magazine between 1891-1892.
Livanov's performance as Holmes was so highly regarded in England that on February 20, 2006, Queen Elizabeth II awarded Livanov an honorary Commandership in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) "for service to the theatre and performing arts"--a rare honor for a non-British citizen...

Trailer for the critically acclaimed Russian Sherlock Holmes films directed by Igor Maslennikov between 1979 and 1986. The films, which have become cult favorites, starred Vasily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Doctor Watson. Livanov and Solomin are considered by many critics to be the most authentic Holmes and Watson.
On April 23, 2002, Vitaly Solomin suffered a stroke during a performance of a play he had directed called "The Wedding of Krechinsky," at Moscow's Malyi Theatre. He died a month later.
On February 20, 2006, Queen Elizabeth II awarded Vasily Livanov an honorary commandership in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) "for service to the theatre and performing arts" for his portrayal of Holmes.

Video sampler highlights some of the legendary artists who appeared on the rare 1973 television show 'Black Omnibus.' This video was created as a promotional vehicle for a proposed re-release of the show by Jimmy Maslon of Ahi-Nama Music.
Hosted by the inimitable James Earl Jones, 'Black Omnibus' was truly a class act--an eclectic, intelligent program that highlighted prominent African-American actors, artists, writers, comics, musicians and academics. When the show aired in 1973, it was far ahead of its time and never caught on with mainstream audiences. The show was canceled after only 12 episodes. 'Black Omnibus' only aired for one season on a handful of public television stations, however the show had a profound impact on those who saw it.
The original tapes of 'Black Omnibus' were thought to have been lost or destroyed until LA music producer and film historian Jimmy Maslon discovered the rare footage in a cache of vintage studio masters. Licensing inquiries regarding 'Black Omnibus' should be directed to Jimmy Maslon at Ahi-Nama Music in North Hollywood, CA. http://www.ahinam...
