Zusammen mit der Stadt Sandau wurde im April 1945 auch die Kirche St. Laurentius/St. Nikolaus weitgehend zerstört. Das Kirchenschiff hat man in den 1950er und 1970er Jahren wiederhergestellt, der wuchtige Turm blieb Ruine. 2002 wurde sein Wiederaufbau begonnen. 2008 war er bis zur dritten Etage wiederhergestellt, darüber ist er noch Ruine.
In den Schallfenstern des noch zerstörten Glockengeschosses hängen zwei Barockglocken, die kleine Glocke stammt aus dem Ende des 17. Jhdts. und die große Glocke aus der Mitte des 18. Jhdts.; sie befinden sich z.Z. noch im gekröpften Zustand.
Im Zuge des fortschreitenden Wiederaufbaus des Turms trägt man sich mit dem Gedanken, die beiden historischen Glocken wieder an ihrem originalen Platz im Turm in einem neuen Glockenstuhl aufzuhängen.
