The Olympics is always a great time for NBA scouts to assess the pool of new talent China has to offer. Menk Bateer (Atlanta 1996), Wang Zhizhi (Sydney 2000) and Yi Jianlian (Athens 2004), for example, all had their first exposure to NBA teams at Olympic competitions. So which basketball star have NBA scouts had their eyes on in Beijing? His name is Sun Yue.The 2.06m point guard played a key role in China's advance to the Olympic quarterfinals. He didn't score much, but his ability to run the team's offense has made him an important player for Team China, which has longed for a decent guard for a while. His performance has also driven up his stock as a future NBA player."I want to show myself to the world," said Sun, who averaged 8.1 points and the team-high 2.3 assists in China's six games at Wukesong Olympic Basketball Arena. "I tried to do my best and play my part on the court. For me, every second counts at the Olympics, so I want to take the chance to let people know me."With Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian already finding success in the NBA, the whole nation is wondering who will be the next big thing for Chinese basketball. There are numerous possible candidates, such as point guard Chen Jianghua, forward Wang Lei, or small forward Yi Li. But none of them have Sun's potential.Dubbed "China's Magic Johnson" by domestic media, Sun was selected by the Lakers as the No 40 pick in last year's draft. The franchise has reportedly agreed to terms on a contract with Sun and hopes to finalize the signing soon.Sun declined to comment on his deal with the Lakers, but the guard did admit that playing alongside Kobe Bryant is his ultimate goal. It turns out he already passed an informal interview with the Lakers star."I met Kobe and told him I'd like to play with him next season, he said 'OK', and 'see you in training camp'," Sun told China Daily after China's opening loss to the US.Sun played a strong game despite spending most of it being guarded by Bryant, arguably the best outside defender on the planet. Sun protected the ball well and kept Bryant from disrupting China's offense too much. The NBA's Most Valuable Player was impressed with Sun in the first meeting."I think he's very talented, actually," said Bryant. "I was very impressed by him. I think he has great size, great length, good shooting touch, good ball handler, good vision, good pace."I was surprised at his size right off the top. He was able to handle the ball. I tried to test him a little bit, see if he could go left, go right, that sort of thing. So I like him."Chris Paul, the NBA's leading point guard and runner-up to Bryant in MVP voting last season, agrees."No 9 (Sun) is the best player in China's backcourt," he said during a press conference. "He is very quick, very athletic, very talented. He can shoot, and I think he can really play."Sun isn't a stranger to Los Angeles either. He has played two seasons in LA in the American Basketball Association (ABA), a low-level pro-league in the US."I know that city pretty well," he said. The Los Angeles Times describes Sun as a smaller Toni Kukoc - long and left-handed with a surprising all-around game. But the competition to join the Lakers will be fierce. The team has already signed guard Dwayne Mitchell and drafted guard Joe Crawford. The team's backcourt features Derek Fisher, Jordan Farmar, Kobe Bryant, Coby Karl and the recently re-signed Sasha Vujacic. It may be a while before Sun's contract is finalized, but his massive improvements have won him high praise from teammates and coaches."He wasn't a very good shooter and dribbler before, but this time he was doing great on both sides," said Yao Ming. "I noticed his progress after returning to China in July. I think he is ready for his NBA trip."China's Lithuanian coach Jonas Kazlauskas agreed with Yao. "Sun is very impressive on both ends. He has size, he can play three positions on court. He can play different offenses, and he is a great defender as well."

Bucks unveil new red alternate road uni
By J.E. Skeets
The Milwaukee Bucks unveiled a new red alternate road uniform on Tuesday night at the Bradley Center, but unfortunately Ball Don't Lie didn't have a correspondent in the house to catch Andrew Bogut high-fiving imaginary teammates. The alternate road jersey, to be worn for the first time at the team's home opener on November 1, is inspired by the Bucks 1971 NBA Championship season uni. And ketchup. Richard Jefferson loves ketchupAnd in other NBA fashion news: The Daily Oklahoman, via Blue Blitz, reports that the Thunder team uniforms will be revealed next Monday. Rumor has it the road jerseys will be sky blue with "Oklahoma City" across the chest, and the home jerseys will be all white with "Thunder" across the chest. Though with that said, there's also a 92% chance the jerseys will just be puffy shirts.

_Detroit 81, Indiana 72
INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 19 (AP) - The Detroit Shock have one focus: Game 2 against the Indiana Fever. The Shock, who have aspirations of winning their third WNBA title since 2003, beat the Fever 81-72 Friday night in the opener of the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Detroit, which swept Indiana in three regular-season games and has won five straight over the Fever - including the last two games of the 2007 conference finals - can wrap up this best-of-three series at home on Sunday. "Close-out games are really hard,'' said Shock center Taj McWilliams-Franklin, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. "The good thing is that we're going back to Detroit, where we're much more comfortable, to play in front of our fans. "Right now, we're just individually focused on each game. We're focused on the Indiana Fever and what we need to do to get through this series.'' Deanna Nolan had 22 points, and Plenette Pierson scored 11 for the Shock. "They have trouble with our personnel, our starting five,'' Nolan said of Detroit's recent dominance over Indiana. "It doesn't matter who they try to stop, somebody else is going to get off.'' Tamika Catchings posted 19 points and seven assists, Ebony Hoffman scored 19, and Tan White chipped in 11 for the Fever. Before the game, Hoffman was chosen as this season's Most Improved Player in the WNBA. To advance to the conference finals, the Fever will have to win two games in Detroit. Last year, Indiana lost at Connecticut in the first game of the opening round and then won the next two at home. Game 3 of this series will be played Tuesday, if necessary. "We'll have to dig down deep and find it within ourselves,'' Hoffman said. "We'll have to find pride in ourselves to get an extra rebound, box out and do some of the little things.'' The Shock, who shot 59 percent in the first half and opened a 39-29 lead, took their biggest advantage, 68-52, on Katie Smith's two free throws with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter. Indiana cut the deficit to 77-68 on White's layup with 1 minute left, but McWilliams-Franklin pushed the lead back to 12 points with a three-point play on Detroit's ensuing possession. "The most important thing is to play focused and hard,'' Shock coach Bill Laimbeer said. "It's a long series, and win or lose the first game, it's important to find out who you are and what you're about. Fortunately, we were able to come away with the win.'' Indiana coach Lin Dunn was disappointed with her team's effort. "We had great momentum going into this game, but Detroit is the best team in the league and showed it,'' she said. "We're going to refocus and go up to Detroit.''

Music: _Bill Laimbeer
College - Notre Dame
Bill Laimbeers name sparks one thing in the collective mind of the Detroit community a fierce competitor with the desire to win and achieve success in whatever he is involved with. As the leader of the 2003 WNBA Champions, he played an integral part in turning a professional sports team from the worst team in the league to the best team in a single season and then followed that up with another championship for the 2006 season. The 2006 season marked the fourth consecutive, fifth overall, time that the Shock had made the playoffs. The Shock won the 2006 championship with an 80-75 win over the Sacramento Monarchs in Game 5 of the Finals.
Laimbeer—2003 WNBA Coach of the Year—has the highest winning percentage of any coach in Shock history entering the 2006 season. He led Detroit to what was at the time the most wins and best winning percentage of any Eastern Conference team in the history of the WNBA during the 2003 season (.735, 25-9, previous best was Cleveland in 2001, 22-10, .687). Under his guidance, the team also made the biggest improvement in the win column of any WNBA team in history (+16). Laimbeer was not only instrumental in leading the Shock to the 2003 and 2006 WNBA Championships, but he also made the personnel decisions that gave the Shock 2003 WNBA Rookie of the Year Cheryl Ford and 2003 WNBA Finals MVP Ruth Riley. Just prior to the end 2005 regular season, Laimbeer was able to bring the all-time leading scorer in U.S. womens professional basketball history, guard Katie Smith, to Detroit.
Laimbeer was named head coach of the Detroit Shock June 19th, 10 games into the 2002 WNBA season. Laimbeer, the third head coach in the Shocks eight-year history, inherited an 0-10 team and guided them to a strong 8-7 finish to close out the 2002 WNBA campaign. Detroit improved in many statistical categories due to Laimbeers hard-nosed approach and uncanny ability to gain the instant respect of his players. After taking the helm, the Shocks rebounding average improved from 27.8 rpg to 36.4 rgp and their point production jumped from 64.4 ppg to 66.8 ppg within the 2002 season. Detroit also took more high percentage shots as their three-point attempts went down from 17.4 to 8.6 per game.
Laimbeer also pushed the team to play more aggressively on the offensive end, improving free throw opportunities to 22.2 attempts per game in their last 22 games compared to 16.3 in their first 10 contests. Laimbeer oversees Detroits basketball staff, its roster development and all player acquisitions, while also coaching the team on the floor. Laimbeer joined the Shock prior to the 02 season as a special consultant, assisting the Shock organization in marketing and ticket sales, as well as providing an experienced sounding board for the coaching staff. As a recognized name in the Detroit area, Laimbeer provides instant credibility to every Shock initiative, on and off the court. He brings hands-on NBA experience, from both a basketball and a business perspective.
He began his NBA career after being drafted in the third round (65th overall) by Cleveland in the 1979 draft. He was traded from Cleveland to Detroit along with Kenny Carr in exchange for Phil Hubbard, Paul Mokeski, and future first and second round draft choices on February 16, 1982. A four-time NBA All-Star, Laimbeer was known as one of the nastiest members of the famed Bad Boys of the late 1980s that won back-to-back NBA Championships in 1989 and 1990.
The Pistons franchise leader in total rebounds (9,430), Laimbeer averaged 12.9 ppg, 9.7 rpg and 2.0 apg in 1,068 games during his 14-year NBA career with Cleveland and Detroit. In 113 playoff games with the Pistons, he averaged 12.0 ppg, 9.7 rpg and 1.7 apg. He was the NBAs leading rebounder in 1985-86 with 13.1 rpg. Laimbeer announced his retirement from the NBA on December 1, 1993. Recognized as one of the all-time best centers in franchise history, on February 4, 1995 he became one of six Pistons players to have their number retired.
A fierce competitor, Laimbeer finished his career with a 580-434 (.572) overall regular season record as a member of the Pistons. Preparing himself for an eventual coaching career, he was able to learn from Chuck Daly, the all-time winningest coach in Pistons history (467-271, .633, regular season and 71-42, .628, playoffs).
As a member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, he helped the squad to the Final Four in the 1978-79 season and was eliminated by the eventual National Champion Michigan State Spartans in the finals of the Mideast Region during his senior season of 1979. He graduated later that year with a degree in Economics.

Books: UNCASVILLE, Conn., Sept. 20, 2008 (AP) -- The Connecticut Sun changed things up and made the game more complicated, yet managed to stay alive in the WNBA playoffs. Asjha Jones scored 16 points and the Sun forced a decisive Game 3 against the New York Liberty with a 73-70 victory Saturday night. Tamika Whitmore made two free throws in the final 30 seconds to help the Sun withstand a New York rally in the fourth period. The first-round Eastern Conference series will be settled Monday night in Connecticut. "It was a heck of a win, but it was a lot tougher than it had to be,'' said Connecticut coach Mike Thibault, names the league's coach of the year earlier Saturday. "For whatever reason, we thought that we'd start doing things a different way. If I had the answer to why we did that, I'd sell it -- give up coaching and make a lot of money.'' Lindsay Whalen had 15 points for Connecticut and Svetlana Abrosimova had 12. Loree Moore led New York with 16 points, and Janel McCarville and Shameka Christon had 11 apiece. The Sun led 64-51 with 8:08 left before New York rallied to make it 71-70 with 1:16 remaining. The Liberty made six 3-pointers in the fourth period and 13 overall. Whitmore sank a free throw with 30 seconds left to give Connecticut a 72-70 lead and made another with 10 seconds remaining to push the Sun's lead to three points. McCarville missed a 3-pointer as the final horn sounded. "I give Connecticut a lot of credit. They did a terrific job with their backs against the wall,'' New York coach Pat Coyle said. "They did what they needed to do to win.'' New York lost McCarville for the last half of the first period after she bumped knees with Abrosimova. McCarville, who lay motionless for a few minutes, left the court without assistance. She returned to begin the second quarter. Connecticut made its first six shots and took an 18-7 lead. The Sun led 25-15 after the first quarter and 40-32 at halftime. "We made a valiant comeback and had a chance to win it. That's all you can ask for,'' Coyle said. "But we'll come out a different team Monday night.''
