Pasquale Paoli, proclaimed Father of the Fatherland and General of the Nation strongly marked the story of Corsica. He is the initiator of the Corsican constitution and contributed to the elaboration of that of the United States of America ; many American cities bear its name : Paoli City in Colorado, Indiana, Pennsylvania...April 6, 1725, when Pasquale Paoli is born in Stretta, close to Merusaglia, Corsica is still occupied by troops genoveses. It is only ten years later, January 30, 1735, that Corsica is declared independent by Cunsulta of Orezza which voted the first Corsican constitution, the first modern democratic constitution. The legislative power is entrusted at an assembly made up of deputy selected by the people and the executive power is entrusted to a junta of six members elected by the assembly.
Ghjacintu Paoli, father of Pasquale, are elected appointed and sit at the junta. But in 1739 Corsica is again demolished by Genoa forcing Paoli with exil. Taken refuge to Naples, Pasquale Paoli will follow the courses of the university of this city where it will make brilliant studies and will go towards a military career. Then it is named second lieutenant with the royal regiment in garrison in Sicily.
Well in exile, the Paoli young person attentively follows the events which shake Corsica and when his Clemente brother and of many notable islanders ask him to return to Corsica it does it. April 29, 1755 Pasquale Paoli unloads in Aleria ; July 14Cunsulta of Orezza proclaims it General of the Corsican Nation.
When Pasquale Paoli seizes the power the disorder and anarchy reigns in Corsica and a heavy spot attend him. As of November 1755 it will make the island a State equipped of a constitution, administration, justice and army. In 1761 the Cunsulta of Viscuvatu will decide to strike currency. Parallel to the political, Pasquale Paoli opens many schools and creates in Corti the university of Corsica. It work also from the economic point of view by supporting agriculture, industry and the foreign trade. It creates an administration in charge of the culture of the grounds and introduced potato in Corsica. Pasquale Paoli develops the exploitation of the lead and copper mines and creates the port of Isula.
Under his authority Corsica becomes a republic admired by many countries.
The incredible treated of easily deceived
France, for strategic reasons, wishing implant in the Mediterranean found the opportunity political to catch Corsica when the Republic of Genoa, driven out of Corsica and sifted debts, sought help near king of France.
Under the treaty of Versailles, signed on May 15, 1768, France lent two million pounds in Genoa which gave in guarantee Corsica that did not have.
Having been informed of the treaty of Versailles, Pasquale Paoli joins together a cunsulta on May 22 with Corti where it made this comment: " Never people did not wipe a more bloody insult... One does not know too who one must hate more that which sells to us or of that which buys to us... Let us confuse them in our hatred sincethey treat us with equal mistaken "
Decided well to defend their independence, the Corsicans gain several victories against the French troops. Most famous being that of Borgu, October 5, 1768, where the armies of France must beat a retreat in front of the combativeness of the Corsican regiments. But higher numbers some and of weapons the French troops gain a decisive victory on May 8, 1769 in Ponte Novu.
The Corsican troops put in rout, Pasquale Paoli constrained to exile leaves Corsica for Angland on June 13, 1769. Corsica loses at the same time his independence and sees the citizens of his democracy passing to the row of stag of Louis fifteenth.
The military victory of French agressor and the exil of Pasquale Paoli did not mean however that Corsica is conquered. The many insurrections which burst in the island are always wildly repressed and one will not count any more the plundered and set fire to villages, the assassinations, the rapes, hangings, the deportations and other exactions specific to all conquests.
A lingua corsa deve campà. Tocc'à noi, u populu corsu di lottà per ch'ella campassi a nostra lingua. Mort'a lingua mortu u populu. Resistenza, parlemu corsu.
